Ally, thanks for sharing vivid words with us all about your new locale. I can't wait to read more about your experiences as your living / working continues to unfold. Thinking of you and your righteous, inspiring practice,

Hey... had read this earlier and saved a response to it on my computer. Forgot all about it. found it now...

Well There are two trains of thought that leave this station :) one is the superfast train in places like china and the west where the infrastructure comes first. They build and then hope that people will use it. this is nice but sometimes it does leave a whole lot of infrastructure that just lies around without being used.
And the next one is the Mumbai Local as we call it... build it, but only if people really require it...
we seem to have traded in the trendy for the functional... its just like a 10 year old car that you try to get to work in every morning hoping that today won't be the day it will break down.
The debate on whether one way is better than the other is always raging...but one of the pros to this is the cost effectiveness and the conservation of resources. The pitfalls are that by the time you have built something, you already need to build something else as the thing you built last, was quickly utilized to its planned capacity and more. Constant state of flux...Now is that a bad thing? hmm...

after much research and reaching your same conclusion about david butcher, i bought some old tunturi exercycles for about $50 each. we found that using 48vdc 500watt scooter motors was the most economical AND most efficient way to charge 24vdc battery array. we found that mounting a skateboard wheel directly to the motor and on the exercise bike freewheel we got the proper rpms to generate 30vdc which was perfect for our needs. we did need TEN of these to generate between 1000-1500 watts.
